AHA Visual and Performing Arts Events

Now in the second year of our partnership with the Arts and Humanities Academy (AHA) at Berkeley High, Kala is leading intensive curriculum-driven workshops at each grade level (912). The artists/scholars of the Arts and Humanities Academy will present work from this year’s AIS residencies that investigates immigrant voices, HIV prevention, First Amendment rights in relation to artists, and ways of mapping our local communities. The exhibition will also feature a sampling of the outstanding artwork that our students make year round. The AHA community, in partnership with KALA, is dedicated to bridging academics and the arts: together we help our students to become scholarly in their art and artistic in their scholarship. We at AHA and KALA celebrate these emerging artist-scholars with Hear Us, See Us: Visions Across Curriculum.
Since 1993 Kala Art Institute’s Artists-in-Schools program has provided K-12 public school students the opportunity to work with professional artists on a variety of visual and performing arts projects. Our program aims to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. We work with each classroom teacher or school administrator to create unique, integrated learning experiences for every student.
The Arts and Humanities Academy (AHA!) provides an innovative, equitable, rigorous academic and arts curriculum. Students use the lens of the arts to seek creative solutions to academic and artistic challenges. As a community of artist/scholars, we develop the skills, clarity and self-confidence to achieve individual and collective goals. Together we explore the arts as a means for self-expression and as a powerful cultural tool.
